Training for Your HGV Class 2 License
If you plan to drive larger vehicles such as lorries and trucks, you will need more than a standard driving licence. An HGV Class 2 licence is the most common type and requires its own set of tests. This process can be daunting, so we’ve created this guide to describe the steps you need to take to achieve your HGV licence.
What You Need
Before you start training, you will need the following items:
- A current driver’s licence issued in the UK.
- A provisional HGV licence. To receive this, you will need to complete a D2 form and have your doctor complete a D4. You will also need to undergo a medical assessment by a GP or other medical provider. Once complete, submit all three forms to qualify for your provisional licence.
- A digital tachograph card. While you won’t need this for training, you will need this for work once you have passed. You will need to complete a D777B form to receive one.
Theory Test
Once you have your provisional HGV licence, you can begin your training! The first thing you need to complete as part of your training is three theory tests. The first test involves a series of multiple choice questions, while the second part will test your knowledge of hazard perception by observing a series of clips. Finally, you will sit an examination involving a series of case studies. Make sure you revise before the test by reading the latest information from official sources. Once you’ve passed, you will be able to start preparing for your practical HGV driving test.
Driving Test
With your theory tests complete, you are now ready for your HGV class 2 training. How much testing you need will depend on your individual experience and learning speed. An average course will last between 20 and 30 hours and usually takes place over a five-day period. While not excessive, these practical tests will teach you the manoeuvres and skills you need when driving a larger vehicle. You will also need to undergo further CPC training every five years to ensure you are up to date on the safe handling of heavy vehicles. Once you have passed your practical driving test, you are now ready to start driving on your own.
