How does driving instructor training work at NxtGen?

NxtGen ADI Training has three stages, these are:

  1. Theory-based – trainees must answer 100 driving theory questions and get 85 of them correct before they can move on to stage 2. All training material and theory books are provided to you.
  2. Practical-based – Retake your driving test again, and pass it, with no fewer than six minor faults. The practical test takes 60 minutes. You will need 20 hours of driving tuition before taking the test, to ensure your driving is top-notch.
  3. Teaching-based – To start teaching driving lessons to learner drivers you will need to complete a minimum of 40 hours of Part 3 training to get your PDI Driver Training Licence, which lasts for 6 months. Once you have your PDI, you will need to complete a further 20 hours of driving tuition before taking the Part 3 exam. This approach allows you to earn while you learn. The Part 3 exam takes 60 minutes, and you will need to take a student with you so the DVSA Examiner can experience your level of tuition.

What do I need to become a driving instructor in Cambridge?

To become a driving instructor, you will need to meet the pre-qualification criteria set out by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency), which is:

  • You must be at least 21 years of age.
  • You must have held a full driving licence for at least 3 years.

If you meet the above criteria, then further checks will need to be made to ensure you are suitable to teach driving skills with NxtGen Driving Academy. These are:

  • DBS Criminal Records Check – you can apply online or by post for a criminal record check.
  • Apply for your ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) License – you will need your driving licence number, details of any disqualifications, motoring or non-motoring offences, and any information on court cases that are being brought against you.

More information is available here.

We want to encourage as many people as possible to enter our driving instructor training courses, but not everyone is suitable. The ADI Registrar will reject any application if any of the following applies:

  • If you have been banned from driving
  • If you have 6 or more points on your licence
  • If you have convictions for non-motoring offences

If any of the following applies, then it is very likely that the ADI Registrar will reject the application:
