Requirements for Becoming a Driving Instructor
To pursue a career as a driving instructor, you must meet the pre-qualification criteria set by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). These criteria include:
- Age: You must be at least 21 years old.
- Driving Experience: You should have held a full driving licence for at least 3 years.

Who cannot be a driving instructor
While we encourage all aspiring driving instructors, there are certain disqualifications:
Your application will be rejected by the ADI Registrar, if any of the following applies:
- If you have been banned from driving
- If you have 6 or more points on your licence
- If you have convictions for non-motoring offences
Additionally, the following circumstances may lead to rejection of your ADI licence application:
- You have been convicted of violent, sexual, financial or drug-related crime
- You have been banned from working with children
How does driving instructor training work at NxtGen?
Here’s a concise overview of how driving instructor training works at NxtGen:
- Part 1 – Theory-Based:
- Trainees must answer 100 driving theory questions.
- To pass, they need to score at least 85 correct answers.
- All training materials and driving theory books are provided.
- Part 2 – Practical-Based:
- Trainees retake their driving test.
- The practical test lasts 60 minutes.
- To pass, they must have fewer than six minor faults.
- Prior to the test, 20 hours of driving tuition are essential to ensure high standards.
- Part 3 – Teaching-Based:
- To teach learner drivers, complete a minimum of 40 hours of Part 3 training.
- Obtain your PDI Training Licence (valid for six months).
- An additional 20 hours of training is required before taking the Part 3 test.
- During the one-hour test, you’ll be evaluated while teaching a pupil.
