Becoming a Driving Instructor is a great career choice, the training lasts as long as you want it to and you can do it all within 3 to 6 months or longer, depending on your lifestyle. It can also be arranged around your current work commitments.
It is compulsory to have a DBS check first. Once this has been returned to you and there are no implications to stop you from becoming an ADI, you are then able to send an application to become a driving instructor off to the DVSA.
The training is done three parts.
The part 1 section is theory based, you need to answer 100 questions. 85 need to be answered correctly to ensure a pass. Training and books are all provided.
This part of the training is driving related, you have to pass your driving test again. You need to drive for 60 minutes and receive less than 6 minor faults. For this you will need to cover 20 hours driving tuition before going for a test to ensure you drive to the highest standard.
This part of the training is teaching based, this lasts for 40 hours which will need to be completed. You are able to start teaching on a PDI Training licence when you have completed the 40 hours of the part 3 training. The PDI Training licence lasts 6 months and 20 additional hours will need to be completed before you take your part 3 test. This will give you the opportunity to earn and learn at the same time and the skills required to complete the part 3 test within the six months of starting on the pink licence. The Test lasts for 1 hour and covers two stages of teaching a novice pupil and teaching a partly trained pupil.
