Become a Driving Instructor with NxtGen

The Journey To Become A Driving Instructor

Becoming a Driving Instructor is a great career choice, the training lasts as long as you want it to and you can do it all within 3 to 6 months or longer, depending on your lifestyle. It can also be arranged around your current work commitments.

It is compulsory to have a DBS check first. Once this has been returned to you and there are no implications to stop you from becoming an ADI, you are then able to send an application to become a driving instructor off to the DVSA.

The training is done three parts.

Part 1

The part 1 section is theory based, you need to answer 100 questions. 85 need to be answered correctly to ensure a pass. Training and books are all provided.

Part 2

This part of the training is driving related, you have to pass your driving test again. You need to drive for 60 minutes and receive less than 6 minor faults. For this you will need to cover 20 hours driving tuition before going for a test to ensure you drive to the highest standard.

Part 3

This part of the training is teaching based, this lasts for 40 hours which will need to be completed. You are able to start teaching on a PDI Training licence when you have completed the 40 hours of the part 3 training. The PDI Training licence lasts 6 months and 20 additional hours will need to be completed before you take your part 3 test. This will give you the opportunity to earn and learn at the same time and the skills required to complete the part 3 test within the six months of starting on the pink licence. The Test lasts for 1 hour and covers two stages of teaching a novice pupil and teaching a partly trained pupil.

Cost of training

Training books = £100

Part 2 Training = £500 (20 hours) Test fee £111
Part 3 Training = £1400 (40 hours) Test fee £111

The cost of training includes your first attempt at part 1, part 2 and part 3 tests. It can be done on a pay as you go basis or can be paid up front. Alternatively you can opt for the package where we pay for your training.

The franchised driving instructor will be charged a weekly fee for the period of 36 months. The contract is broken down into two parts:

For 3 months you pay a reduced rate of £165.00 per week which is a start-up period. This is designed to help you build your diary up.

You then start paying the full weekly franchise of £282.00 per week (depending on which franchise you have chosen).

We feel that the contracts we offer will give you good value for your money. Based on first-hand experience of being in a franchise we believe it can be done better and cheaper.

Becoming a driving instructor is a rewarding job. If you work a 45 hour week, you could turnover £1150 before deductions. This is based on a £25.00 per hour rate. After all deductions which will include your fuel of £125 per week (average),the franchise fee which is £282 and tax which is £120.00 then your weekly take home could be £600.00. This works out to be £30,000 per year with 2 weeks franchise free.  Of course you can work as many or as little hours as you like. The beauty of this job is that you can work around yourself and your family. There is also the added benefit of being your own boss with the safety net of Nxt Gen Driving Academy providing support and work.
